In 2006, the Home Builders, Inc. team stayed busy with fundraising and walking for a very important cause. Charli Beck, Jo Ann Beck, Jeanette Heinbuch, and Rhonda Crafton participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Washington, DC in April and Charlotte, NC in October. The Avon Walk is non-competitive and structured for walkers of various fitness levels with a choice of completing a marathon walk (26.2 miles) or a marathon and a half (39.3 miles) over two days.

Each participant was required to raise a minimum of $1,800 to walk in each walk. HBI raised over $15,000 in 2006 and has raised over $12,000 in 2007, so far. Their various fundraisers included Basket Bingo, raffles, yard sales and donations from many businesses and individuals. Home Builders, Inc greatly appreciates all the contributions and support they have received.

In response to the needs of women and their families, the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has for more than a decade raised funds and awareness for access to care and finding a cure for breast cancer among women. Don’t be fooled, it can strike men as well! There is a new diagnosis every 3 minutes and a life lost every 14. Because there is no known cure for breast cancer, awareness, education, and early detection are our best defenses against the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, there is a 97% survival rate when breast cancer is caught early, before

it spreads to other parts of the body. From 1992 through 2005 the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade raised and donated more than $400 million in 50 countries worldwide. Funds are raised through a wide variety of special events, product sales, runs, concerts and other initiatives in addition to the Avon Walks. The donations go towards medical research, access to treatment, screening, support services and education.

In 2007, HBI’s team consisting of two participants walked in Boston, MA in May and would like to send six walkers to Charlotte, NC in October. The Avon Breast Cancer Crusade’s commitment to this cause is unwavering, as is HBI’s enthusiasm and commitment! They know they could not do it without the generosity of so many.
